I received an invitation from a student-junior-cum-friend on behalf of the management of BMCET, Surat. It was about addressing the faculty members and participants during a One-day seminar on “Current Scenario of public transportation in Surat: Problems and remedies” on 7th October 2016. I was set for a session during post-lunch hours after awakening pre-lunch sessions of specialists Dr. G. J. Joshi and Dr. S. Arkatkar from SVNIT.
Integration of all available modes is the key solution to challenges shaping up due to the urban transportation lackings.
Multi-modal transportation is breaking a single human trip in a different mode. That means a traveler uses different modes of walk-bus-metro-bus-walk and similar combination.
Intermodal is the mode between two major transportation mode. Say, for an example, a passenger departs from a point, uses a bicycle and reaches BRTS/MRTS facility for further use. Once completed BRT/MRT, the passenger again will need to use a mode to reach to a destination, by walk/by using a bicycle.
A mere creation of BRTS/MRTS will not serve the purpose except for mentioning crown investments in larger forums. The municipal organization needs to focus on both of these two aspects which highly dependent on local practices and mindset of citizens. Even though a very classy facility of BRT/MRT is in place, people will not use it in the absense of reaching to these services.
Here is the presentation that I discussed for reference.
It was a good experience of interaction at the institute. Most of the faculty members are young and energetic, most importantly – curious. While discussion, I shared my views on the challenges that citizens are facing and possible alternatives that may be derived using design thinking. Thanks to my beloved student, Er. Bhaumik Mengar who did all the background of activities for the event.
